Domain Names and How to choose one

What are Domain Names? Why it is considered so vital for a business to have one? Why it is crucial to register it? These are some of the questions a user will have, if he or she is new to the Internet industry. When it comes to creating a website the first thing a user needs to think of is a Domain Name. Selecting the name is something that needs a lot of thought process, as it is very crucial to the success of the website. These names are defined as web addresses that symbolize existence of an entity on the web. When a user plans to create a website for his business it is very important that the user picks the most suitable Domain Name.

There are certain guidelines that one should follow before choosing a Domain Name. Domain Names should be unique, short and simple, as users generally find it tough to remember lengthy names. The user should also make sure that the name should have certain keywords incorporated in it. This is because a keyword rich domain is likely to have higher rankings in search engines. For example, if you run a business that deals in cell phones, your domain should have certain words that are related to cell phones. Once the user has shortlisted a name he needs to check Domain Availability. After checking the Domain Availability it is ready to be registered. At times there are chances that the name chosen by a user is not available for registration, in such a case the user is generally advised to come up with a new name.

The next step after checking the availability is Domain Registration. Itis a procedure that users need to undergo when they want to set up a website. The companies that register these names are called as domain registrars. The Domain Registration process requires the user to provide the domain registrar with some contact and technical information for the record. This information is stored in a registry for other users, so that they can see under whose name the domain is actually registered. A domain registrar can usually register a domain for a minimum period of one year and a maximum of ten years.

One of the most significant guideline a user needs to follow is that he needs to make sure that the domain registrar they select is reliable and has a good reputation in the market.

The 4 Important Basic Steps of Creating a Blog - Domain Name Selection, Hosting, Software and Systems

You will find two main ways of creating a blog. One is set up for you automatically and thus is fast and easy to do, but offers less value commercially. If your outlook is not for commercial purposes and also you don't mind taking a risk and losing it at some time later, then go to blogger.com or Wordpress.com, open an account, set up your profile and start blogging away...

If your curiosity is commercial, then you should get yourself a cool domain name that is either 'youcompanyname'blog.com or 'yourkeyword'blog.com. Notice that there are no dashes or spaces, as your url is best when it one long string - this is what people type in most often when you say what it is. It is the root name design if you will. It also says what it is on the tin - my favourite expression - but lets not put hide the smell of the rabitt from the dogs! Step 1 - Get a Domain that you can own and is yours, this is such a low cost that it is unfathomable why you would not do this.

Anyway if you opt for the first option, you can always copy across to a new domain later - I have had to get this done! There are thousands of people who would love to assist you here, this is not an issue - just be sure you own and I would only by a nation domain like. co. uk or a .com all the others just tend to take ages to get listed in Google - and you will want to be listed in Google. I am getting listed in just a few days right now - but not for .biz, .net etc, these just don't work for me - maybe it is me!

So sometimes you can purchase hosting from the same place, if you are new only at that, this is the way to go. Your website needs software to provide pages to the web and that software lives on the server, usually when you start out you is going to be sharing a server with someone. You want to make certain that the company has a basic ethics / decency plan i. e. no porn, no gambling and anything that might not be congruent with your brand, unless you are in to gambling and porn, in which case go forward and suffer! Seriously, it is worth sending emails towards the guys who are selling you the hosting, as you don't want to be associated with the bad things, you will suffer later. If you have cash, and this is not really expensive, it will be best to host with a unique IP number this could guarantee complete separation from whoever else is about the server... no matter what happens in the long term...

Next you need the software. There are numerous providers, I have tried a few not just about all. I have tried Joomla which I found simpler than Drupal, I liked Joomla ahead of WordPress in the beginning as they completely rewrote Joomla, whereas Drupal as well as WordPress had old code and were a mishmash associated with releases that basically made them unstable... I possess several sites in Joomla now, some have been hacked to death - annoying to express the least - there was a security concern - now fixed... Then WordPress announced their brand new version 2. 7 and wow they got rid of all of the old code. Now admittedly the first edition was a little buggy, but they have gone to the next version already which is now stable and cool. What is particularly cool is the amount associated with plugins and web designs that are available along with the code being totally search engine friendly.

So, now if you are searching for a blog I would search for domain name buy + hosting + wordpress. There are a few or simply go to Wordpress. org/hosting and pay someone a little amount to get you started. For a expert, this stuff is easy to do. For you if you do not know I would not advise that you learn to do it yourself unless like me or which professional, you are going to do it countless times.

So that, ladies and gentlemen is the best advice I can give on how to produce a blog... using this method and for not a lot money, you could have it all organised, site bought, hosted and wordpress set up in a couple of days for less than a 100 bucks, probably less than 50 - shop around - it is probably worth paying some more to make sure you have someone who will probably be nice to you later on... Oh, and I'd pay extra for your host to take regular backups of the blog - that is problem that I had but never experienced, as I had taken the back up choice - phew, another close shave and potential lack of months of work...

JavaScript: Use a Web Proxy for Cross-Domain XMLHttpRequest Calls

The XMLHttpRequest object (also known as the XMLHTTP object in Internet Explorer) is at the core of today's most exciting AJAX web applications. But actually writing client web applications that use this object can be tricky given restrictions imposed by web browsers on network connections across domains. This HOWTO provides describes the issue in simple, easy to understand language and provides one possible solution: a web proxy that relays network requests from your web server to services such as the Yahoo! Web Service APIs.

Why You Need a Proxy
PHP Proxy for Yahoo! Web Services
Other Solutions
For More Information

Why You Need a Proxy

All modern web browsers impose a security restriction on network connections, which includes calls to XMLHttpRequest. This restriction prevents a script or application from making a connection to any web server other than the one the web page originally came from (Internet Explorer will allow cross-domain requests if the option has been enabled in the preferences). If both your web application and the XML data that application uses come directly from the same server, then you do not run into this restriction.

If, however, you serve your web application from one web server and you make web service data requests to another server -- for example, to the Yahoo! Web Services -- then the browser prevents the connection from being opened at all. Bummer.

There are a number of solutions to this problem but the most commonly-used one is to install a proxy on your web server. Instead of making your XMLHttpRequest calls directly to the web service, you make your calls to your web server proxy. The proxy then passes the call onto the web service and in return passes the data back to your client application. Because the connection is made to your server, and the data comes back from your server, the browser has nothing to complain about.

For security reasons it's a good idea for any proxy you install on your web server should be limited in use. An open proxy that passes on connections to any web site URL is open to abuse. Although it is difficult to limit the connections to your proxy from only your application, you can prevent the proxy from making connections to servers other than those you specify. Hard code the URL to connect to in the proxy itself or provide limited options. This makes the proxy less open and less useful to users other than your client application.

PHP Proxy for Yahoo! Web Services

For the Yahoo! Developer Network JavaScript Developer Center we have provided sample code for a simple web proxy, written in PHP, that takes requests for the Yahoo! Search APIs. You can install this proxy on your own web server in any convenient location (your web server must be set up to run PHP).

The proxy encodes the Yahoo! Web services site URL in a global variable called HOSTNAME. ou will need to modify this variable to refer to the Yahoo! Web Services API you'll be using. This is the domain used by the Yahoo! Search web services; other domains include Yahoo! Local (http://local.yahooapis.com) and Yahoo! Travel (http://api.travel.yahoo.com).

define ('HOSTNAME', 'http://search.yahooapis.com/');

To use the PHP web proxy in your client application, the URL for the request in the JavaScript code includes the path for the Yahoo! Web Services request, minus the domain name. The domain name is added by the proxy itself on the server side. This code snippet comes from a more complete XMLHttpRequest code sample on our JavaScript Developer Center.

// The web services request minus the domain name
var path = 'VideoSearchService/V1/videoSearch?appid=YahooDemo&query=madonna&results=2';

// The full path to the PHP proxy
var url = 'http://localhost/php_proxy_simple.php?yws_path=' + encodeURIComponent(path);
... // core xmlhttp code
xmlhttp.open('GET', url, true);

Note that although this example uses an HTTP GET request, the sample PHP web proxy also supports POST.

You could modify the proxy to do post-processing of the data you get from the request on the server side, for example, to strip out only the elements you're interested in or the parse the XML into a format you can more comfortably handle in JavaScript.

Other Solutions

In addition to using a web proxy to pass web services data to your application, there are several other options to working around cross-domain browser restrictions:
Use apache's mod_rewrite or mod_proxy to pass requests from your server to some other server. In your client code you just make the request as if it was actually on your server -- no browser problems with that. Apache then does its magic and makes the request to the other server for you.
Use JSON and dynamic <script> tags instead of XML and XMLHttpRequest. You can get around the browser security problem altogether by making your web services request directly inside a <script> tag. If the Yahoo! Web Service you're using can output JSON (using the output=json and callback=function parameters), the data you get back from the web service is evaluated as a JavaScript object when the page is loaded. See our JSON Documentation for an example of how to do this in your own scripts.
Digitally sign your scripts. In Firefox you can apply a digital signature to your script and those scripts will then be considered "trusted" by the browser. Firefox will then let you make XMLHttpRequests to any domain. However, no other browsers support script signing at this time, so this solution is of limited use.

To transfer a domain to new registrar:
Advise the domain's administrative contact that the domain name is being transferred.
Yahoo will e-mail the administrative contact by the next business day with instructions on how to approve the domain transfer.
Once the administrative contact has approved the domain transfer, new registrar will send a transfer request to the registry. If the domain's administrative contact does not have access to the account from which the domain transfer request was purchased, the recipient of the email request must forward the Transaction ID and Security Code to someone who does. These code must be entered on the Pending Domain Transfer screen in your account in order to approve the transfer. Once the Transaction ID and Security Code are successfully entered, new registrar will request the transfer at the registry. The registrar of record does not deny the transfer, the transfer is automatically approved.
The registry will contact Yahoo! via email.
Yahoo! will send an acceptance or rejection notice to the registry. If the registrar fails to deny the transfer within 5 days, the registry will move the domain registration to this registrar.
The registry will notify us of the acceptance or rejection.
The new registrar will inform you via e-mail that the transfer is complete.
Should the domain transfer fail, The new registrar will notify you via email. You will resubmit your transfer request if the transfer fails. However, to ensure that the information listed in your transfer request remains valid, you will have 30 days from the time of your purchase to complete the domain transfer.

Anyone successfully hosting Yahoo domain elsewhere?

" I have a domain registered with Yahoo - $2.97 a year was a great deal - so I locked it in for 3 years for what most others were charging for one. I put in the DH name servers in the Yahoo control panel and I was able to access the site and upload stuff to it with Transmit to the DH servers. So far, so good.

Now I got to upload some more and it gives me a password error in Transmit. I try to go to the domain using Camino and get the Yahoo "under construction" page.

I double checked in the Yahoo control panel and the DH name servers are still listed, but when I try to access the site I still get the Yahoo place holder page.

I want to host the site at DreamHost and I thought it was simply a matter of changing name servers like DH describes, but for some reason Yahoo keeps flipping me back to their "under construction" page.

I did a Google search and I am not the only one with this problem, but no one seems to have a solution. Since the domain is new, I cannot transfer it to DH yet. Yes, I can forward the domain, but I signed up to have Yahoo register my domain and that's all I want them to do.

Any ideas?"

Yahoo Domains - Thoughts From A Happy Customer

Yahoo Domains is great. I have had an amazing experience using Yahoo to register and maintain my dot com domain name. Before I had my website, I was looking at the elements I needed to get started and wanted to make all of the best selections in terms of the best registrar, website hosting, and design.

I did not want to cut any corners so I did my research before I chose Yahoo Domains. I looked at other companies, what they offered, and the kind of support they would give after the sale. I, of course, also considered the price point as a factor before I made my selection.

Price isn't everything, though. Yahoo is not the most expensive, but it's also not the least expensive in terms of registrars out there. However, they do have the greatest value; at least that was my conclusion after I researched the other popular registrars on the market today. ...
Yahoo does more than basic, even with their lowest price domain registration. That is why I like Yahoo Domains. Other companies the offered lower prices than Yahoo did not tend to include as much as Yahoo did with even their basic domain registration.

Yahoo Small Business of course has lots of options for your small business, including website building and things of that nature. Some of these tools and support are included with all of their packages, but some of them are only in the upgrade (higher priced) type packages.

Having these options is what really did it for me. I did not want to be limited to basic domain registration. I wanted the extras and I wanted Yahoo's world class service and support that they have been known for through the years. This way, when trouble strikes, I won't be left feeling helpless.

First comment from this forum :

" I am writing this in the hope that this will help others not get in the same jam that I did.. I took Yahoo up almost a year ago on getting a domain for $ 2.99. I thought I would grab my name and start building my business. That saying that you get what you pay for sure applies. I was never able to get to the 'control panel' but figured that at least I had it and that when the time was right I would start building my web site.
About a month ago since my domain expires Oct 11th I looked for a way to make sure that they wouldn't renew it. I sent them countless emails with no answer. When I followed their tutorials they said in order to close out your small business account to go to control panel and follow their instruction. This was not an option since I have never been able to access that.
After further investigation I found out that when you get a domain it is sent to Australia. Google's groups is full of lot's of people that have had the same experience as me.
Today I found out that they were trying to debit my checking for $ 9.95 for another year. No warning or emails at all.
Since a lot of us are just starting here that amount may not sound like much but they have no right to take our money. Any other bills we have we at least get a warning that our account will be debited. If I hadn't caught this I could have had an overdraft as I was not expecting this.
I feel if they are to offer this service than you should stand behind it. There newest feature is that you can talk to someone live to answer your question for the price of only $ 24.95. If they can't solve your problem they said then it is free.
Thankfully I have found someone reliable and have a domain and will be building a web site soon. Stick with the pros.
I hope this helps someone else before they get caught.
Kathy"

Link to a forum : Yahoo domain name registration, be careful, you may loose your domain name

"This happened to me last year:

I registed a domain name with yahoo. I paid for 5 years.

After sometime, I bought a hosting plan from yahoo. Since I didn't like the hosting plan, I cancelled the plan.

Know what, yahoo cancelled my domain name also! I lost a domain name for which I had paid for 5 years.

Talked, Shouted, Cried - with yahoo support people! No use! Domain name remained cancelled! I had to pay again to get back the domain.

(Their stupid logic: They call a hosting plan as an upgrade of the domain plan. When you buy hosting, you upgrade domain name. So when you cancel hosting plan later, according to them, you cancel not only the hosting plan, but also the domain name associated with it)

Didn't expect such an idotic logic from a company like Yahoo."

I recently wanted to changed it from being forwarded to my webspace to a server I had setup localy.
I find out I cannot login, I knew I did not have any email from yahoo when I made the account so I knew something was up. I tried doing a password recovery but it told me my account has been diactivated
I was really wondering why I did not get a single email from yahoo, I did a Whois lookup on my domain and the email address is blair.thiessen@gmai.com insted of blair.thiessen@gmail.com

I go and try and sign up again to see why I might of miss typed my email and it only asks for your email once no confirmation . I always type my email right and the confirimation usualy just bugs me if anything but everyone has it.

Now I have no idea how to get into my setup for the domain because my account is diactivated because of my never confirming it because I had a typo on my email. I have looked all over their site for a phone # to contact to get this fixed and cannot find one only ones about sales . All the Q and A on the website tells me retarted info like "passwords are case sensitive please rember that when entering your password". That's not exactly what it said but useless help info for me. I have e-mailed them and I get the Q and A copied and pasted into an email .

Please help me out if you have any ideas to get my account back or even get yahoo to remove my domain so I can register it with someone else. A good phone # to conatact yahoo would be great. Thank you!"

Link to a forum : Yahoo Domain & IP

"Alright I have a few problams.

Question 1

First off what is *.30.forumer.com IP? because the one that shows in the Admin CP links me to a page that says "Server 1" and when I PING server 30 for it's IP the IP it gives me takes me to a page that says "Sever 15" so what is *.30.forumer.com IP address (see IPs I have used below):

a) 69.64.49.67 (Ip given in Admin CP)- loads a page for server 1
b) 69.64.36.9 (Pinged IP for server 30)- loads a page for server 15

Question 2

How do I set my domain up with Yahoo?

I mean I am not transfering it so don't suggest that as I am not open to it. I added both IP address and waited 24 hrs each time and when I go to my address/doamin each IP address took me to some forumer page for servers (1 & 15).

Not to mention Step 2 never showed up in the Admin CP even after waiting 48hrs.

This is a big issue for me because I like editing the HTMl rather then the Board Wrappers; but Invision_Free makes setting up a domain way more faster and simpler. I have had no luck with forumer and all support topics already made for Yahoo domains are not helpfule for 2 reasons:

a) No one helped the person
b) No one gave them an exact answer to their question

You can go to my domain which right now uses the IP address: 69.64.36.9 and see that it takes you to a usless page: www.emina*******r.net

Link to a forum : Yahoo Domain Fees Rise!

"From July 1st, users that have domains registered with Yahoo Small Business, will see their fee jump from $9.95 to $34.95.

The news came in form of e-mail for anyone who has registered a domain with Yahoo Small Business, and a Yahoo representative told CNET News.com Friday that the e-mails have been sent 90 days, 60 days, and 30 days before users were set to renew their domain registration.

But some blogs are expressing dismay at the price increase, which is three and a half times what domain owners have paid in past years.

Yahoo said the $25 price increase is primarily being instituted to match the cost of doing business, and that registering domains--the process of creating a new Web address--can cost even more with other Web sites.

However, other competitors have much lower prices, including GoDaddy.com or Google Apps, both of which charge annual fees of around $10.

Since domain registration is not the core of Yahoo's small-business site, the company said its prices can not be as low as those of sites that focus on registering domains.

Low domain registration fees, though, can be a foot in the door to coax customers to upgrade to more profitable services.

According to Yahoo, new domain registrations will still only cost $9.95 and after a year, the fee will go up to $34.95."

"First Microsoft tries to buy Yahoo!, now Yahoo! raises their domain renewal rates.

Important note: Beginning on July 1, 2008, Yahoo!'s annual domain renewal price increases to $34.95 per year.

If this is accurate would this be considered Highway Robbery? Or do they think their customers are fools? Can they really justify that large an increase? Or are they just being greedy and hope their customers don't Google for GoDaddy.com?

Apparently the above quote was sent by email to people who have their domains registered with Yahoo! I'm not one of them. But I just visited their site and they make absolutely no mention of the increase. They do have a plan that has domain name plus email for $34.95 a year

So if this is true, this is truly a smack in the face to a lot of people who use Yahoo! to host their domain. (Can you say mass exodus?) If it's not true, sorry to waste your time ."

A question from Len : "Do you know who I can contact at Yahoo??? or have any ideas????"

"In 2001 I purchased a domain name for my corporation (pacificappraisers.com)… I have been automatically renewing the Yahoo domain since I originally purchased it. Today, I decided I was finally ready to create a site for my corporation… I logged into Yahoo to manage my account – I then purchased the Yahoo web hosting basic package. As I made my changes to DNS and mail servers – none of the changes were sticking… so, I called tech support. They informed me that I was no longer the owner of the domain name… someone purchased it in 2004.

After talking to tech support and 2 supervisors… I am stuck in a very strange position. They told me they used migrated from Network Solutions to MelburnIT (or something like that) and somehow my domain name became available for resale. I asked them to look at my payment history showing that I have been paying for the domain name since 2001 and even made a payment in December 2007 for the renewal.

They have no answers or possible solutions… what can I do? Is my corporate domain name gone forever?

Heck, they wouldn’t even say sorry…

Do you know who I can contact at Yahoo??? or have any ideas????

Thanks,

Link to a forum : "Pointing Domain from Yahoo to Go Daddy Servers"

"Hello,

I have a customer who registered his domain name with yahoo he now wants to point that domain to a hosting account that I have started for him at GoDaddy. Should be simple but it has been anything but.

He has emailed Yahoo several times with no response, he has called their tech-line only to be told he needs to email them instead. We finally figured out through GoDaddy that Yahoo registers through Melbourne IT. He has tryed calling Melbourne they are in turn asking for a 12 digit registration number that my customer does not have. Melbourne told him he needs to get this from Yahoo, Yahoo says they do not give registration numbers out. This leaves my customer with only 2 options, either register a brand-new domain through GoDaddy or go with Yahoo for hosting.

Has anyone else experienced this? Did you ever finally get through and get things transfered?

Any advice on this would be appreciated.

Thanks

How can I access my Yahoo domain?

Question: "I purchased a domain from yahoo last year but can't see the basic website anymore. I can't remember how to access and manage my yahoo domain name. There is no direction on their website either. Thanks for your help in advance :)"

Answer: "You'll have to log into your domain control panel to access and manage your yahoo domain.

1. Sign in to your Business Control Panel.URL: http://smallbusiness.yahoo.com/services/ (If you have not yet signed in with your Yahoo! ID and password, you'll be prompted to do so here.)
2. Once signed in, you will see modules for each of your domain names on the "Manage My Services" page. Select the "Domain Control Panel" link that corresponds to the domain whose record you wish to edit."

"My Personal Experience With Yahoo Domains "

I have been using Yahoo Domains (through Yahoo Small Business) for several years now, and I have to say that I am very satisfied with my experience with Yahoo. At the time that I chose my domain, there were only a few reputable registrars on the market, and I have seen many either spring up or become more popular since then (such as GoDaddy, for example).

One thing that is great about choosing Yahoo to register a domain is that they have been in business for over a decade with their search engine and other great products to service not only average consumers, but also small businesses and big businesses alike. Because they have a reputation for quality, it's easy to trust them as a domain registrar.

The thing I really like about Yahoo personally is that you can register your domain and maintain other aspects of your site's setup easily and effectively. To make things more enticing, Yahoo provides excellent 24/7 customer service and support, so you are never left in a lurch should you encounter any questions or problems.

Getting my domain was easy and straight-forward. I simply created my Yahoo Small Business account, searched for the domain that I was interested in securing - and it was available so I purchased it! For only like 10 bucks a year, you really can't go wrong. That may be a bit more than some of the competition but Yahoo makes it worthwhile with their additional services and features that they include with registering your domain through them.

How to Get a Cheap Yahoo Domain Name

Once you have decided that you want to have your own website on the internet its important that you choose a yahoo domain name that accurately represents what you plan to use it for and what extra features you need to get the most out of it.

With over 80 million registered domains on the internet its becoming harder and harder to find relevant Yahoo domain names that are available which are related to the topic you want to target, especially for .com Domain names which are by far the most popular. For this reason there are now many other types of Yahoo domain names which you can choose from such as .net and .info.

The first thing you will need to do is visit a website such as Yahoo and start searching for available .com Domain names using the search feature. As most names are already taken you will probably need to use three or more words to find one that is available (you can also use hyphens between each word to find available names).

Because people are familiar with .com domains you should start searching for them first but its not absolutely necessary and you can find a much shorter Name using a different extension such as .net or .info. The extension of your Yahoo domain will not effect the performance of your website or How well it operates.

If you want to generate free traffic from the search engines and achieve top rankings you should try to use keywords that you want to target in your Domain name. So if you want to start a website about losing weight you should try to use words like "weight loss" or "diet" in the Domain name to help your rankings in the search engines for those keywords.

Just having a popular keyword in your Yahoo domain Name is not enough to achieve top rankings but it will help the search engines identify what your website is about so its important that you include at least one keyword that relates to the market you want to target if you want to generate free traffic in the future.

When you have found a yahoo Domain name for your website you should seriously consider adding the private registration option to your order. This will protect your Domain from unwanted attention by hiding your personal details such as your email address which could be collected by spammers.

After you have purchased a yahoo Domain name you will need to find a website hosting plan that suits your needs and meets your requirements depending on How much disk space and data transfer you need. Once you have a hosting account you can set up your website and have it up and running within a matter of hours.

Protect Your Domain Name

Imagine you’re the owner of a successful Web site, but when you logon one day all you get is an error message. Or worse yet, the domain name now points to a site full of advertisements. That’s right. You’re out of business.

This happens every day because of a perfectly legitimate process known as “drop catching,” where people quickly snag the domain names owners have let expire and try to resell them or use the links associated with the names, which could be extensive, to create Web sites loaded with advertisements. You can easily avoid becoming a victim of a drop catcher by better understanding how the domain registration system works to protect your domain name.

Your Web site, with all the content you have so painstakingly added, sits on a computer with a unique address called an IP address, which is simply a series of numbers. A domain name is an address forwarding service that directs visitors to the site using this IP address. Domain names are used instead of numbers because most people find it easier to remember a name rather than a bunch of numbers. It’s as if you could dial your friend’s name into the telephone instead of his phone number.

You can purchase a domain name by registering it with a provider of domain services such as GoDaddy.com , the largest on the Web, or any number of other registrars. The name can be registered for just one year, for about $10, or for as long as ten years, for around $80. Many register for only one year because it’s cheaper, or they only want the site for a limited time.

At the end of the year, the registrar usually sends an email renewal notice to the owner. If the owner doesn’t respond to the renewal notice, the domain name will eventually be made available for purchase by someone else. Roughly 20,000 domain names become available every day because the owners allowed them to expire, or the owners didn’t realize that their domain name was up for renewal

According to the rules established by the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers(ICANN), domain registrars have 45 days after the expiration date to notify the owner that their domain name is going to be dropped from the registry. If the name is dropped, the guidelines then call for a 30-day grace period during which the owner can still claim the name. After this grace period and then another five-day holding period, the name is dropped from the registry and anyone can claim it.

Since 2004, however, a number of domain service providers, starting with SnapName.com, have created an auction process for expired names which bypasses the original drop process and makes the names available in as little as thirty days. GoDaddy.com begins the auction process even before the names have officially expired, although it does warn the auction participants that the owner could still claim their name.

These providers of domain services each have tools on their sites to make it easier to grab expired names. They provide constantly updated lists of expired names, various auction services, search engines, and other free tools for anyone to quickly and easily find available domain names. Some sites also offer software for sale that further simplifies the search for expired and soon to be expired names.

With the surge in online advertising, drop catchers will continue to seek out domain names from sites with good traffic, anxious to exploit the established links. Protect your site and your business by checking the expiration date of your domain name. Relying on the registrar to send a renewal notice that could easily be sent to an old email address or get lost in the spam catcher, could cost you years of hard work.

Advantages of Yahoo Domain Registration

When it comes to domain name registration, you'll never run short on choices. Domain registrars all differ in many respects, including their cost, features, customer service, and other factors. Yahoo Domains is one of the most popular registrars in the world because it offers many advantages and unique features.

Using Yahoo Domains, you can register as many names as you like. When it's time to add content, they will help you set up your site from scratch in simple and easy steps. There are site builders and tutorials available to walk you through the whole process of setting up a site, regardless of your previous knowledge of web design.

Not all registrars offer all domain extensions, such as .info., tv., .name, .fm, and others. Yahoo Domains offers all currently available domain extensions. While currently unregistered domain names can be registered for $9.95 annually, you can also register premium domain names at varying costs. Premium domains include domain names that are high value, and owned by a reseller who makes them available through brokers such as Yahoo.

Since Yahoo is one of the most established names on the Internet, and provides a number of unique and robust technologies to users, you can be confident that they can be a comprehensive, full service solution for your business needs - from domain registration to search engine marketing ad campaigns.

If you are looking for a reliable domain name registration service equipped with important, valuable features, and trusted customer service, Yahoo Domains is a perfect choice.

I will get the help I need in a short period of time and with dependable results.

Yahoo Domains: A Simple Web Site Solution

Having put up more than a few Web sites myself, one of the easiest ways I've found to get your domains set up and running is to simply go through Yahoo.

Yahoo will register your domains' names for under $10 a year, though as of this writing, Yahoo is having a sale on domains for $2.99 per year. That's a lot cheaper than some registrars I've seen that are still trying to charge $20 or more just for domains.

Once you get your domain registered, you still need to host it somewhere. Again, Yahoo has a simple answer, or several simple answers, in its Geocities service. You can plunk down your domains for free at Yahoo Geocities, but you'll have ads. For a nominal fee ($4.95 per month) you can get 500 MB storage and 25 GB per month transfer -- that's more than enough for most starter sites.

If you host your domains through Yahoo Geocities, you'll get plenty of tools to help you design and manage your site, enough to do just about anything legal you might want to do on the Net.

You'll have access to Yahoo web page templates as well as a point-and-click designer, in addition to the ability to manually play with your domains' HTML.

Yahoo also gives you choices for uploading, using their easy upload manager or the more traditional FTP for large sites. E-mail is part of the package.

A recent addition to the Yahoo Geocities tools is the ability to start and manage a blog on your domains.

All in all, registering and hosting your domains through Yahoo is an easy solution for a home user or small business.
